The Harry James Group is working in partnership with a globally recognised, smart technologies company who is currently expanding due to market demand. We are searching for a System Engineer in grid code compliance for the Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) business.
The position of System Engineer Grid Code Compliance (SE) will be part of the Project Delivery Team and report to the Regional Manager of Project Delivery. The SE is responsible to oversee the Project Design (Electrical Design Package, Communication, and minor Software), Commissioning, and related Reporting. This role will also review project technical specifications and provide feedback to ensure that grid code and interconnection requirements will be met. Applicant should have a solid understanding of fundamental electrical engineering, project management and construction principals, as well as experience designing high power electrical systems. This position will be a member of the customer technical Subject Matter Expert Team for ESS Products and Projects and will work closely with the following groups: Software Delivery, Product Delivery, Project Management, Commissioning Manager, and other various groups to ensure ESS projects fulfil customer functionality and contract requirements.
MINIMUM SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Power Systems Engineering, or equivalent work experience
5 years of experience with renewable energy with distribution or transmission level Energy Storage Systems
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Knowledge of regional grid codes such as (CAISO, ERCOT, PJM), Canada (IESO), Chile (National Electric Coordinator (CEN)) etc.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to integrate compliance considerations into the design, development, and implementation phases, ensuring seamless alignment with grid requirements.
Work with Sales and Marketing teams to negotiate the technical aspects of contract negotiations and emerging market needs.
Assist with creating commissioning process documentation that clearly delineates the minimum requirements for the site to be approved by the grid operator.
Establish and maintain the engineering, design criteria and applicable standards and specifications for the ESS project
Interface with external product vendors to understand the specification(s) and function(s) of their product(s) and service(s)
Specify appropriate system components, calculate component ratings and quantities, and create detailed bills-of material for energy storage projects
Familiar with Power System Analysis; able to carry out steady state simulations of BESS designs to confirm system design meets applicable grid code requirements related to inverter parameters, BESS harmonic performance, etc.
Ability to travel to domestic and international project sites and/or vendors, should reside close to a major airport.
ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Familiar with lithium-ion battery
Familiar with relevant codes and standards for ESS and inverters (NEC, IBC, IFC, NFPA, UL, IEC)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate highly complex engineering, construction, and operational issues
Experience with utility scale energy storage and renewable energy projects and products (bi-directional inverters, various battery chemistries, PV, wind turbines, flywheels, etc.).
Understanding of Inverter, Converter, Transformer, Battery, Circuit breaker, Fuse, AC/DC power supply electrical equipment.
Applicant should be able to explain in detail the electrical principals of voltage, current, real and reactive power, energy, charge, AC/DC voltage, single-phase, and three-phase power, and other fundamental electrical engineering concepts.
Applicant should be able to read and understand drawings of electrical controls. Especially single-line, three-line, fire safety systems, and communication diagrams.
Ability to configure and troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLC) and industrial electronic equipment (protection relays, inverters, BMS, etc.).
Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required
